Second time around

DaVinci Kalani Convertible Toddler Honey

DaVinci Kalani Convertible Toddler Honey

We bought this crib 5-1/2 years ago when our daughter was just born. She used it for three years (as a crib and converted into a toddler bed), and our son has been using it the past 2.5 years. So it has been constantly used every night for 5.5 years, and is as good as new. Of course some minor scratches (teething stages), but nothing unexpected from a baby's crib. It still looks great. And my 3 kids jump up and down it in (all at the same time) and it has proven very sturdy. We've put it together, converted it to a todder bed, converted it back, disassembled and reassembled when we moved, and converted to a toddler bed again. Through all the wear and tear and taking apart and putting back together, it has stood the test of time (and kids) very well. I don't have a single concern with it's sturdiness or anything else. So reassuring that our crib is very sturdy and safe, given all the crib recalls over the past several years. I would absolutely buy this crib again, and fully recommend it to anyone. Great crib!

  1. It looks as good as it does in photos, and i am also satisfied with the quality of wood used. It was very easy to assemble. Its been only 2 months since purchase, I will have to see if it endures the wear and tear of day to day use and makes it into the toddler bed :-).

  2. The crib arrived in perfect condition. The instructions for assembly were easy to follow and the finished crib is very stylish! The stain is a beautiful color and design helps keep the baby safe (No sharp edges and all parts fit very well together). Overall, I am more than pleased with this crib!

  3. I have purchased this Crib twice now. Once five years ago for my oldest in honey oak and again this year for my youngest in espresso. I loved the crib then and am still loving it now. It is sturdy enough to grow with my kids for many years and the finishes are beautiful. I have never worried that my kids will knock over, break or shake apart the crib even when they are at their wildest.
For people who are picky about dents and scratches on the surface of the wood, this is probably not the crib for you...However, you will not like ANY crib around this price. The Kalani crib, like all cribs around this price, is a softwood crib and shows wear very very easily. Hardwood cribs wear better but are also A LOT more expensive. Personally, for the price difference I can handle the teeth marks and scratches.
Amazon did a wonderful job shipping the crib. It was here within 8 days using the free super savers shipping and not a single problem when we opened the box.The instructions are really very simple. 45 minutes was all it took to get everything out of the box and together.
This is really a wonderful crib for the price.

  4. The color of this crib is darker than the picture. But it still a very beautiful crib. I had received my crib and noticed a huge gash in one of the railings. I immediately contacted Amazon and told them about my problem. The person who replied was very nice about everything and sent me out a brand new entire crib to replace the other one. They overnighted it as well. I am VERY impressed with Amazon.

  5. I scoured reviews to find the best crib for our baby. The Da Vinci Emily was top-rated by Consumer Reports, but this one wasn't rated at all. The Emily and the Kalani seem very similar, and this one was rated just as well by all the online reviews, so we bought this one in espresso after months of charting out the positives and negatives of all the espresso cribs I could find.

First, the positives. It took my husband and I about two hours to assemble this crib. We weren't in a hurry, and the directions were straightforward, but it just took some time to make sure it was all put together correctly. The wood is gorgeous! It's an absolutely beautiful espresso and matches our other espresso furniture perfectly. Everyone is stunned by how lovely this crib is!

We've moved once with it already - had to unassemble and reassemble - which was no problem. Our daughter is not quite four months old, so I can't vouch as to long-term wear and tear, but I lean on it often and it is totally sturdy, like you'd expect a regular bed to be. Maybe even more sturdy than a regular bed. In fact, it seems so amazingly sturdy that I've been tempted to climb in there with her!

Now for the negatives: Oh wait, there aren't any. I expected this crib to scratch easily because of other reviews, and so we were careful with it while putting it together, but it really hasn't been a problem. I think there are a few small marks where the button of my pants has leaned against it, but you'd have to look close to notice and they are still the espresso color. More like indentations than scratches. This crib is most certainly heirloom quality and far exceeded our expectations. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of furniture we own, and certainly nicer than any other cribs I've ever seen.

Update after one year: There are still only a few small marks from jean buttons, but our little darling has left some rather visible teeth marks along the rail. We don't mind them, but you may want to consider a protective cover when your child nears the biting age. Our daughter has probably only scraped her teeth on the thing less than ten times, but each time has left a visible mark. The crib is still incredibly sturdy, though, and we know parents who have converted theirs into a toddler bed now and said they could both sit on it with their child! Still a five-star crib in my book, despite a few teeth marks.

Update after three years: We converted this crib to a toddler bed for our little girl more than a year ago. The toddler rail is not as long as I thought it would be... about one-third the length of the bed rather than one-half... which was an issue for maybe a week or two until she learned not to fall out of the bed in her sleep. Since then, though, it's been great for the rail not to be too long, as my daughter and her little brother love to climb in and out of the bed all day long while they are playing that it is a car or house or whatever. It's continued to be a great bed and we really haven't had any issues with scratching. Now that it's a toddler bed, my two children also love to hold on to the end of the bed and jump up and down... it's a great height for them to hold on and jump up and down. Also, we've now tested the weight capacity many times, as I've often laid down on the bed (so that it's fully supporting my weight) while tucking in my little girl at night. It's held strong and we have certainly been glad to have such a sturdy crib and bed all this time. I expect that we will move her into a larger bed by the time she's four, but the toddler bed would probably work until age five if it needed to.

  6. This is crib is beautiful and sturdy. Easy to build and easy to use (no moving parts). I like that the crib doesn't drop down, then I don't have to worry about my kid figuring it out and possibly hurting himself. I am 5'5" and I have no problems picking up and laying down a sleepy baby. Moving the mattress height is pretty easy too, I just did it the other day in a matter of minutes.

  7. I L-O-V-E this crib! I'm a first time mom and had been doing research on the 'perfect' crib since we had found out at 3 weeks along! I had seen a few other cribs, liked them, but could never get a good deal on shipping or be able to pick them up at the store. Finally my Husband and I 'settled' on the Kalani in Espresso. I saw it had high reviews (other then scratches and hard to read directions) but personally everything was fantastic! The crib was so well packaged that there was no damage in shipping, and the only scratches on it were from me assembling it BY MY SELF (6 months preggo) and they aren't that bad. BUT I do have to say that I can see it scratching a lot in the future, but most cribs that we looked at had that same issue...The directions were easy to follow (even with preggo brain) and it took me maybe 2 hours total with potty and lunch breaks and once again, I was able to do this all by myself and it was EASY! Oh, and the color of the Espresso is perfect! It's not too dark (they can go overboard and it looks black) and not too red (almost like dark cherry) but it's a perfect chocolatly rich brown that will go well with any decor!

I would highly reccomend this crib to anyone who will listen. It's beautiful, sturdy and looks like it will last through all of our babies (planning on 2 or 3) Overall a great buy!!!

  8. This is a great product. It is built from very high quality pine, and is extremely sturdy. Assembly was straight-forward and the hardware included is excellent quality as well. Our baby moves around quite a bit during sleep, and this crib does not move one bit! As a result, she sleeps very soundly at night. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
